Essay 4. “Wind Power”
Wind is one of most powerful demonstrations of nature. What does it mean for people, it depends of how we interact with it. Wind can be very useful for people, and on the other side it can be an evil enemy.
Many years ago, power of wind could destroy a village or kill a lot of people. But then we learned how to use wind to benefit our needs. We began to build sailboats, mills, kites and other interesting and useful devices. Since those times, wind ceased to be just an uncontrollable evil for us. Wind power can still harm us today, but we learned how to predict tornados and other demonstrations of nature. Today we learned on how to defend ourselves from wind and how to get more benefits from it.
Maybe one of better examples of utilization of wind power nowadays is converting it into useful energy that we can use to power our houses and industrial objects. The USA has many wind power plants installed in deserts. Many households in Europe have individual wind turbines which are connected to electric power transmission networks.
The first successful experiments with using wind power detected in years 1887-1888 in the USA. Small wind turbines for lighting were widespread in the beginning of the 20th century.
Large wind power plants which were connected to distribution network were invented and built in Russia, in the year 1931.
The most successful countries with wind energy using are China, USA, Germany, Spain and India.
Our country almost doesn’t use wind power. We have only several wind farms for industrial use and scientific research. Individual wind turbines are not widespread in Ukraine at all – like many other good ideas on how to live in harmony with nature.
